The Gimmer Crag face
Loft Crag is the lowest of the Langdale Pikes, yet its main cliff, Gimmer Crag, is second only to Pavey Ark in the Langdale region. Gimmer Crag is a classic climbing venue and has been in use for decades. It remains popular, despite the recent trend towards lower-level climbing locations.
For fellwalkers, Loft Crag offers yet another splendid peak in this magnificent range, and a view which is in some respects even better than that of Harrison Stickle. Loft Crag may be climbed directly using the climber's path from New Dungeon Ghyll, or it may be reached from the northern plateau by an easy detour taking only a few minutes, thanks to the fell's low northward prominence.
The summit is quiet and unfrequented, and in good weather is a great place to relax and enjoy the view of Langdale. Due to the cliff face only yards away, the view looking directly down is striking and immediate. This is also an excellent place from which to see Bowfell and the head of Mickleden (although apparently Pike of Stickle is even better in this respect).
Loft Crag is easily missed by walkers intent on bagging the three main Pikes, but for only a small amount of extra effort you'll be rewarded with a splendid little mountain ... and probably all to yourself, too!
