Winter mountaineering

Here are some photos from the Lakes and Wales, formatted for use as desktop images. Please note that the maximum resolution for these pictures is 1024 x 768: I could blow them up bigger, but my camera is rather basic and there would be a significant loss in quality.

To use, right-click on the thumbnail image and select "Save target as ..." or "Save linked file as ..." (depending on your browser). You can then set the saved image as your desktop background through your system preferences or control panel. All of these photos are "as-is" and don't feature annoying copyright warnings or adverts in the corners!

The Lake District, May 2005

These pictures were taken during my extended trek in the Lake District during May 2005. Other than a couple of spells of wind and rain, I was blessed with extremely good weather, and managed to get some good pictures.

The Climber's Traverse, Bowfell. This is one of the best high-level paths in Langdale.

The Scafells seen from Red Pike's ridge above Mosedale.

Wastwater and the mountains of Wasdale: one of my favourite views.

Looking across the Great Slab from the River of Boulders, Bowfell.

Langdale, looking green and heavenly on a Spring morning.

North Wales
July and November 2005

My two visits this year to Snowdonia have also been fortunate weather-wise, with only a little low cloud and rain for a couple of days in July. In particular, the conditions during the November trip were exceptionally clear, resulting in crisp, far-reaching views.

Looking across Llyn Ogwen to the Glyderau mountains on a hot day.

Tryfan, most dramatic peak in Wales, from the meadows near Gwern Gof Isaf.

A gorgeous view of the Northern Glyderau from Tryfan North Peak.

The Cantilever, Glyder Fach, with a dusting of frost.

Snowdon from the Miner's Track below Glaslyn.

Winter mountaineering
April 2006

My first independant winter expedition took place in April 2006, to the Langdale area of Lakeland. I am more familiar with this valley than any other, so thought it an ideal place to make a first winter lead; we chose Bowfell via the Climber's Traverse, which warranted a Grade I Winter classification that day.
